MENTAL HEALTH DISORDERS

Mental health treatment is a multi-step process that involves evaluating, diagnosing and treating a mental disorder. Our world renowned and respected Psychiatrist has 30+ years in Dual Diagnosis, Mental Health and Addiction.

THOUGHT DISORDER

Thought disorders are usually diagnosed when a person’s behaviour speaking indicates problematic, illogical, or incoherent patterns of thinking. Thinking normally involves three parts: thinking about something, stringing thoughts together on what you are thinking about, and, finally, the delivery or flow of a thought pattern. A thought disorder disrupts one or more aspects of the thought process.

STRESS RELATED DISORDERS

Stress-relate disorders result from exposure to traumatic or deeply upsetting events. Specific disorders include acute stress disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and adjustment disorders.

DUAL DIAGNOSIS

Dual diagnosis is where a mental illness and substance use disorder co-occurs. Dual diagnosis is also known as co-morbidity or co-occurring mental health and substance use disorder.
Someone with a dual diagnosis has one or more mental disorders (including anxiety disorder, depression, bipolar, borderline personality disorder, etc.) and an active addiction (alcohol, drugs, gambling, Internet etc).

PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS

Psychotic disorders are severe mental health conditions. This group of neurological disorders changes the way a person thinks, feels and behaves. Psychosis, a shared symptom among psychotic disorders, is characterized by the presence of hallucinations and delusions. We treat all types of Psychotic Disorders such as:

  • Schizophrenia

  • Schizoaffective Disorder

  • Schizophreniform Disorder

  • Substance Induced Psychotic Disorder

  • Bipolar Disorder

  • Postpartum Disorder

  • Severe Depression

  • Psychosis Suicide

MOOD DISORDER

Also referred to as depressive disorders, mood disorders are characterized by moods or emotions that are incongruent with one’s current life circumstances. Depending on the specific mood disorder, it may involve gloomy, low and depressed moods, or excessively happy and euphoric moods called “manias.” Some of the most well-known mood disorders include bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder and postpartum depression.

SCHIZOPHRENIA

Thoughts or feelings out of touch with reality, poor concentration, memory loss, disorganised speech, unpredictable behaviour and lack of interest in daily activities.

BIPOLAR DISORDER

This class includes disorders with alternating episodes of mania – periods of excessive activity, energy and excitement – and depression. Someone with this disorder experiences alternating periods of mania (excessive activity, energy and excitement) and generalised depression.

CLINICAL DEPRESSION

Constantly feeling sad or disinterested in daily activities leads to a range of physical and behavioural symptoms, including insomnia, loss of appetite or overeating, low energy levels, poor concentration, low self-esteem, thoughts of suicide or suicide attempts.

ANXIETY DISORDERS

A person with an anxiety disorder may experience irrational fear and avoidance of certain objects, people or situations that pose little or no danger. Some of the most common anxiety disorders include generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, panic disorder and specific phobias.

PERSONALITY DISORDERS

The specific traits of different personality disorders vary significantly; however, the symptoms of all personality disorders tend to be generally stable and consistent over time. They also usually directly reflect childhood circumstances. For example, someone with an anxious temperament and demanding parents might develop a rigid and fearful way of relating to the world that later becomes avoidant personality disorder. Antisocial personality disorder, borderline personality disorder, dissociative identity disorder,  histrionic personality disorder and schizoid personality disorder are examples of specific personality disorders.

TRAUMA DISORDERS

People who experience a highly stressful event may have trouble returning to a normal state of mind afterwards. In some cases, they develop a mental health disorder related to the experience. This is known as a trauma disorder, and there are different types which we treat:

  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

  • Acute Stress Disorder (ASD)

  • Secondhand Trauma

  • Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD)

  • Disinhibited Social Engagement Disorder (DSED)

  • Adjustment Disorders

POST TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER PTSD

Nightmares, flashbacks, paranoia, uncontrollable thoughts and debilitating anxiety after a traumatic event.

ATTENTION DEFICIT DISORDER

Poor concentration, limited attention span and hyperactivity.

DISRUPTIVE, IMPULSIVE-CONTROL AND CONDUCT DISORDER

These include disorders that affect how you feel emotionally, such as the level of sadness and happiness, and they can disrupt your ability to function. Examples include major depressive disorder and premenstrual dysphoric disorder.

OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE DISORDERS

An unreasonable fear causes the person to develop habits to alleviate stress, including arranging objects in a specific manner or touching things more than once. A person with an obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) grapples with obsessive thoughts and urges, or compulsive, repetitive behaviours. Body dysmorphia, gender dysphoria and impulse control disorder are all classified as obsessive-compulsive disorder related conditions.

SUBSTANCE USE DISODER

Someone with this disorder has developed an addiction to alcohol, drugs

DISSOCIATIVE DISORDER

Someone with this disorder feels their sense of self is disrupted. This class includes dissociative identity disorder and dissociative amnesia.

SOMATIC DISORDER

These disorders include problems with emotional and behavioural self-control, such as kleptomania or intermittent explosive disorder.Someone with this disorder has physical symptoms that cause significant mental distress and difficulty coping with daily life. This class covers somatic symptom disorder, illness anxiety disorder and factitious disorder.

WHAT IS MENTAL ILLNESS?

A mental health disorder is defined as any condition that affects a person’s thoughts, behaviors or moods. While some mental health disorders last for a limited period, others are chronic and lifelong. When these issues cause high levels of stress or affect their daily functioning or relationships, treatment may be necessary to help a person manage their symptoms.

Mental Health Disorders: List

CAUSES OF MENTAL ILLNESS

Most Mental Illnesses develop as the result of a combination of biological, psychological and environmental factors.

Some mental illnesses have been linked to abnormal functioning of the brain due to chemical imbalances, injuries or developmental abnormalities. Mental illnesses sometimes run in families, suggesting that genetics also plays a role. Other links to mental health disorders include:

  • Long-term substance abuse

  • Poor nutrition and exposure to toxins

  • Undergoing severe psychological trauma as a child, including emotional, physical or sexual abuse

  • Death or divorce

  • Dysfunctional family life

  • Feelings of inadequacy, low self-esteem, anxiety, anger or loneliness

  • Social or cultural expectations

MENTAL HEALTH AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE

Mental Health and Substance Abuse

Concurrent Disorders, or mental health and substance use disorders presenting simultaneously, are exceedingly common. People living with a drug or alcohol use disorder are about twice as likely to already exhibit symptoms of a mental health disorder. Similarly, those who are living with a mental health disorder are twice as likely to develop a substance abuse problem as well.
