CONCURRENT MENTAL HEALTH DISORDERS

When a person has at least one mental health disorder and is addicted to at least one substance simultaneously, it is known as a concurrent disorder. In many cases, substance use and mental illness go hand-in-hand, reinforcing or leading into one another. Treating one without treating the other is not only less effective, but it also leaves many individuals unable to make a full recovery from either condition. That’s why in circumstances like these, concurrent  disorder treatment from a professional institution who understands the nuances and complexities of treating both conditions simultaneously is necessary. The process can be difficult to navigate and a challenge for patients, but it is absolutely possible to address a person’s mental illness and substance use in a way that enables them to make a full and lasting recovery.

WHAT ARE CONCURRENT DISORDERS?

Concurrent disorders are mental health disorders that have developed as a result of substance abuse and/or addiction to drugs and alcohol – or vice versa.
And how does a concurrent disorder differ from a dual diagnosis? The key difference is the nature of the diagnosis. In the case of a dual diagnosis, an individual with a developmental disability (such as autism spectrum disorder) may also be diagnosed with a mental illness (schizophrenia, mood or anxiety disorder.)
By contrast, with concurrent disorders, there is cause and effect. It could be the case, for example, that a mental illness led an individual to self-medicate with drugs and alcohol or the damage caused by addiction to the brain led to the development of a mental illness. For this reason, the two must be treated together.

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS OF CONCURRENT DISORDERS?

Concurrent disorders refer to any form of mental health disorder and substance use disorder. Unfortunately, due to the endless possible combinations of symptoms, there is no standout sign to look out for.

Despite this, concurrent disorders can be divided into five main groups – substance use disorder, combined with:

  • Mood and anxiety disorders (depression, panic disorder…)

  • Severe and persistent mental health disorders (schizophrenia, bipolar disorder…)

  • Personality disorders (borderline personality disorder, problems related to anger, impulsivity or aggression…)

  • Eating disorders (anorexia nervosa, bulimia…)

  • Mental health disorders (gambling, sexual disorders…)
